Now that the dust has settled -- we check in with our pundits for some post-primary reflections -- and a look ahead to November's election. Here to talk about that. Andy Smith, the Director of the UNH Survey Center and Dante Scala with the NH Institute of Politics at St. Anselm College and visiting scholar here at UNH for the fall '06 semester. Q The BIG story of the Primary -- how LITTLE people cared? What was the final tally for TURNOUT ? Q How did Turnout IMPACT the results??? Q Suprised at all, or did this primary go by the SCRIPT? Q Carol-Shea Porter: The Rochester Activist, & former social worker -- ran a grass roots campaign managed to UPSET Jim Craig in the Democratic 1st District Primary? WHAT happened?? Q She had a STRONG anti-war Message -- was that a FACTOR in bringing people to the polls? Q Did Jim Craig's insider status hurt him? Q Carol-Shea Porter takes on popular Republican Incumbent Jeb Bradley in November. His approval ratings pretty high?? Q Harper's Magazine: had article examining Bradley's Investments and Voting Record. Will the portrait painted of him -- hurt him in the general election? ======== Q In 2nd District: It will be a REMATCH between Charlies Bass and Paul Hodes. People say Hodes is a dif candidate this time around? Bass defeated Hodes in 2004: 59% to 38% Q Bass was elected in 94 when REPUBLICANS were swept into power --but, given the discontent with Washington & the War in Iraq -- will being a DEMOCRAT help Paul HODES? Q We keep hearing this is the year for Democrats to wrestle back control of Congress. How do you see that PLAYING out here in NH? ** Bass says dem strategy is to "nationalize" all the races, but all politics is local. he works for NH. Q Not just the WAR on the minds of Voters -- what other issues will be driving the election?? Q Bass & Hodes closely matched in CAMPAIGN funds? ============= EXECUTIVE COUNCIL: Q The Republican District-3 Race for Executive Council was a squeaker. Local Publisher Sean Mahoney LOST to Chuck Morse of Salem **Did we see a SPLIT vote in the Seacoast.benefiting MORSE? Q Chuck Morse will be facing Former Sen Pres. Beverely Hollingworth What are your thoughts on that MATCHUp? ===== Q On the STATE LEVEL. Democrats need more than a DOZEN seats for the STATE Senate to go DEMOCRATIC? Any suprises on that front? In 4th District Sen Robert Boyce LOST to retired Laconia HS football coach 2-term state rep Fitzgerald Q The Primary Election came on the heels of the 5th anniversary of 9/11 -- Q The President has LOW approval ratings -- while Governor Lynch has HIGH favorability. Will that help local DEMOCRATS gain some ground in November? Q In Governor's Race: Lynch's numbers have to be daunting for his challenger. Where can James Coburn make some inroads against John Lynch? Where is he vulnerable? Q Education Funding: Lynch against Constitutional Amendment to take Court out of Ed Funding? Q What will you have your eye on in November -- what's the RACE to WATCH? Q Any predictions? |
